What is this all about?

The stage is set years ago in Vegas. Zatanna finds Bruce Wayne brooding over his difficulty in mastering a sleight of hand trick on the roof of a casino. The look of Vegas is captured beautifully in a way anyone would imagine when thinking about it. An array of colorful lights shining brightly against the night. In one panel among the bright lights we see a sign for the world’s greatest illusionist, Zatara. Fun fact, this is Zatanna’s father and his first appearance was in Action Comics #1. Spoilers ahead!

We jump forward to right now as Batman and Zatanna are taking on the zealot Ascalon. They are quickly joined by the rest of the crew, accompanied by Azrael. Ascalon touches Azrael’s face and Azrael freaks out.Detective Comics #959

Back at the Belfry we see our dwarfling friend being treated by Doctor Victoria October, and we get a hint that Clayface is interested in a similar ‘curing’ treatment.

Batwing brings Batwoman to Burnside where he is doing all of his A.I. research. The question arises of ‘what type of problem would you need a zealot assassin supercomputer to solve?’

We end with Zatanna and Batman looking out over Gotham the same way they looked out over Vegas years ago. But instead of the bright lights of Sin City, we see the dark, gothic dimness we all know Gotham to possess.

Azrael also has yet to remember what he truly is. What is the big picture right now between Zatanna and Batman? What is up with this A.I. zealot? What will happen next with Azrael? Will this begin to tie into the Metal storyline? I think/hope it will.Detective Comics #959

The Review

The writing is superb and the artwork is radiant on this issue. Tynion IV has done a stellar job in his ability to convey an interesting story and to bring these wonderful characters to life. Raúl Fernández and Alvaro Martinez have done beautifully in this issue’s artwork. I especially loved the way they portrayed Zatanna’s magic in the few panels that we saw it. The overall feel of this issue was dark. The story of Detective Comics has once again peaked my imagination and I am very excited for issue #960.
