Detective Comics has hit its stride again with part 1 of Intelligence. Someone from Azrael’s past comes back to warn the others of a looming threat heading their way. While Bruce is on the search for a woman he has a history with, will he find her?
The story kicks off with another look at this developing friendship between Jean Paul and Lucas. They are quietly becoming one of my favorites in this series. While they are watching a basketball game, a creature named Nomoz crashed the game to warn Jean Paul that no one is safe. In the meantime, Bruce decides to visit the New Iceberg Lounge in search of someone. It seemed like his plan was not going the way he planned but Oswald offered a different way of entry. Back at the Belfry, the team rushes to find Nomoz aide and that is when we find the continued mystery of Azrael’s suit but also of his creation. We are also introduced to Ascalon who Nomoz calls the “End of the Crusade”.
There are so many themes in this issue that quite honestly all hit their mark. James Tynion IV has gotten back to the threads that made his run so popular in the beginning of rebirth. On top of that Alvaro Martinez is a bright spot in this issue, after the darker tones in the past Orphan/League of Assassin’s storyline. Martinez brings an Eddy Barrows feel to the book which again brings me back to what made this such a strong book.
This was a fantastic start to what promises to be a high-octane arc wrapped in mystery. Plus, once you find out who Bruce is looking for, let’s just say that this arc will be lacigam.
